The Phenk Mat Mumbai Programme

Phenk Mat Mumbai (PMM)

PMM is an initiative of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Club Mahindra to make Mumbai litter free. The project is supported by Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai and the Government of Maharashtra. Star Pravah is the Media Partner. SBC³ is the implementing partner and has conceived, developed and rolled out the programme.

PMM seeks to make Mumbai litter-free by involving children and youth. It aims to influence littering behaviour among children studying in Mumbai’s schools and colleges, encourage them to develop the habit of cleanliness and make them lifelong ambassadors for anti-littering behaviour.

In phase 1, we have rolled out PMM in 200 schools and colleges of A and F wards, in August 2017. In Phase 2, we will reach out schools across Mumbai, starting February 2018.

PMM has been designed using the techniques of Social and Behaviour Change Communication as an interactive and evidence-based process.

SBC³ conducted focus group discussions with children in schools to understand current perceptions and attitudes towards littering, and created a programme that will appeal to students logically and emotionally. The two-month programme gives children ample opportunities to practice new learning, influence behaviour of others and create impact.

The programme is delivered through workshops, the content for which has been developed by SBC³.

To keep the students motivated, we have created two cadres of responsibility.
a. Eco Captains: Five students will lead and implement the programme across their school. The students are supported by a teacher coordinator.
b. Eco Commandos: Two students from each class will carry forward the initiative in their respective classes supported by the class teacher.

Eco Captains and Eco Commandos are taken through an interactive workshop in their school. This workshop equips participants with knowledge about littering, littering behaviour, the reasons for littering and its impact.

As a part of the workshop, participants conduct a litter audit of their school. Through innovative methods like group activities and skits, they come up with ideas to prevent and change littering behaviour – their own as well as that of their school mates.

For Classes 1 to 4: Around 45 min | For Classes 5 to 10: 1 hour 30 min | For school housekeeping staff: Around 15 min.

IEC Material

Besides the workshops, SBC³ has designed posters that promote anti-littering behaviour. The posters promote the theme of “taking pride in doing the right thing”, a theme that is emphasised in the workshops too. The posters, in English, Marathi and Hindi, are displayed in each classroom.

SBC³ has also created an anthem, Ham Honge Kamyab, that is part of every workshop. The anthem reiterates the theme of taking pride in the right behaviour and sends the message that ‘it’s time to change old habits’.
